Why Your Website is Costing Your Business

Your website is suppose to be your online tool to generate business, so what has changed in the past 2 years.

Today's Customer

The Customer!

Their expectations and how they want to engage with you online is the game changer.  Generating an experience is key for you.  Being interactive online is how you capture their attention.  Having  a strategy so you can speak to your target market will make this a much simpler and easier process.

Are you talking with Baby Boomers or Gen Y?  Does it matter?  You bet. Let’s dissect that together:

Baby Boomers like to do their research.  Being older means they connect, absorb and respond in their mode, which might be different from yours.  Are you creating their web and online experience from their desired mode of communication or yours?  Have you done your research and are you talking to your ideal client?  Knowing these points will make your job smoother.  It is like when you visit your 93 year old Grandmother you will talk with her differently than your 3 year old nephew.  The same thing goes for talking with you prospect and client/customer online.

Gen Y takes their technology serious, they like fast, easy absorbable communications.  You want to connect with this group by having your mobile applications and WAP pages for ready them.  They like speed, interactive and convenience.  This generation does not respond to emails, they are attention driven.  Activating their interest requires you be creative and think in their desired mode as well.

Does this mean you cannot serve both market, NO.  Does it mean you want to have separate spaces for them to connect and engage with you, YES.

Are you using the tools available to bring your audience/target market together with you?  Even though they have their differences, they have similarities as well.  Some things are common sense when you stop and give it a little more thought.  Everyone like the social aspect today.  It is not just for the Gen Y crowd ( a common question).

When you focus from a strategy, creating your online presence then you will use the platforms that will fit your needs to reach the market that your business serves.

Back to the original statement-WHY Your Website is Costing Your Business-Simple

  • It’s unoriginal
  • It’s OLD
  • It’s not engaging or interactive
  • It’s not talking to your target market the way they want to we talked WITH

What to do?

  1. You would do better to have a video of you talking to your customers and making a real life impression.
  2. You would do better to create a blog where you can educate your customer.
  3. You would do better to have a Q&A session once a month and post recording.
  4. You would do better to post a page of video interviews with your current customers.

Now, like the newly infamous Old Spice man videos “I’m on a horse” (here go watch it will make you laugh)

Michele, terrific post - straight to the point. As part of an agency that specializes in marketing to Baby Boomers, I really appreciated your advice that businesspeople do their research.

We've been conducting national research with 40+ Americans on their online pet peeves/favorite features. Early findings (presented at the Marketing to Baby Boomers and Beyond conference in May) match up neatly with your "WHY" bullets: the #1 frustration reported was with outdated information. And, the older the respondent, the less they feel websites reflect their generation or are relevant to the concerns of folks their age.

One caution about interactivity. More than 20% of survey respondents to date have complained about special apps and sites with too much Flash/animation. So, when marketing to Baby Boomers online, make your site engaging but don't get too tricky.

    Thanks Erin,

Yes, as an Internet Marketer I have always counseled clients to not use Flash/animation as it slows down load time and it is not beneficial to their message. They would do better to spend money creating engaging viideos instead ;)

Thanks for the compliment about being straight to the point, something that comes rather naturally to me and frankly use to get punished for...YEAH now rewarded for feels much better
