What is Social Media Manners Twitter chat?
Simple we gather every Tuesday evening 10pm ET to discuss how to bring back civility and charm to online communications. It is a weekly conversation about social media manners.
Many wonder why there is even a need and I chuckle when I think about we had someone called Miss Manners for years when we were supposed to be more focused on “doing the right thing” and look how many screwed up then.
What do you talk about?
Plain and simple it is about giving a conversation space where you can gather to learn and create a fruitful journey in social media.
Each week we talk about all the things connected to building sustainable relationships via social media.
One week we might talk about “how to ask for a RT and received it and build good will at same time” another time we might talk about “powerful ways to received a recommendation via linked without coming off like a whinny baby”
One thing I hear a lot if Social Media Manners chat is that it is really common sense…and yet
As Voltaire so apply put it “Common sense is not so common”.
It’s on Twitter and you said
…” oh me that’s not where I know how to get around that well”…take a breath you will enjoy this even if you are new to twitter. Twitter can be chaotic when you do not use things to help you separate conversations out so you can read them without other conversations distracting you. We accomplish that by using a hashtag. Hashtag looks like this #. For social media manners our hashtag is #SMManners.
When did #SMManners start and WHY?
I have been tweeting about social media manners using different label for to years. Giving tips and one day I decided to use questions to uncover what were my friends biggest beefs about manners in social media. I collected 100 things that piss folks off on Twitter …then ask someone I had been tweeting with for a little bit Dabney Porte (@divacoachdabney) to have a one on one via skype and after a few talks we started discussing a topic for a book…out of that conversation we decided to start asking our friends their opinions around social media manners as a test to see if this topic was a hot as we thought it could be…Boy what a surprise as folks kept turning up week after week.
What are the rules to play in #SMManners?
Rules, well guidelines and common sense
1. Be courteous
2. Stay on topic
3. Your blog posts are welcome, share your links AS LONG as it is relevant to that weeks topic. For example, that week’s topic is How to ask for a recommendation” and your blog post is “how to ask for comments politely and get results” you add hashtag #smmanners your tweet will be off topic and considered spam by the community.

I just read your last #SMManners chat and I do not know what I can contribute. STOP, what makes all twitterchats works is that everyone joins us.
