I agree, too often people don't realize that a business relationship is not very different from other types of relationships. It still takes two to tango. If you don't fit your client and your client doesn't fit you, chances are it won't turn out to be successful for either party.

If you are changing who you truly are to make a buck then to me you are just working for a paycheck.

Here is what I know...there is nothing immature about being creative and we have seen what the world of big business success record is right now with their lack of creativity in finding solutions that are responsible...like paying executives 10 million while they lay off the work force is plain ole immature to me.

I say bring on the creativity and if someone feels because I am creative I am too "far out there" for them they were not my ideal client and I would have hated working with their restrictive attitudes.

I do appreciate your perspective, it helps me feel even more strength for my own.

This is why I love whimsical movies so much. They teach me about Creativity. Kelsey has a great post on Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium (A movie that I initially hated and found without merit - but when I look at it through the lens of creativity....I can't help but love it). http://www.themoleskin.com/2010/01/lesson-from-...

@DogTheBiscuitHunter - I think you're going to find business rapidly changing over the next 10 years. Especially as the Creative Class continues to rise into positions of power. Good references for this change include: A Whole New Mind, The Rise of the Creative Class, Outliers & The Element to name but a few.

I understand that sometimes it's good to be creative, fun, and surprising, etc. But sometimes, in business especially, creativity can translate to immaturity. Wearing 2 diff socks is really harmless, but there are some would-be backers or could-be clients who would not feel comfortable putting their money in the hands of someone they view as odd or silly. Or they would not want to buy anything some immature goof-ball was selling. I don't know the stats 4 sure, but I think there are probably more people who want to see their business person or partner as mature and solid; sound of mind and not frivolous. If u are just saying to be creative meaning free-thinking and innovative, that's one thing, but other than that, I don't think there is alot of room for impetuousness or shock-selling in business. I know that I personally would not do business with someone I thought of as not being serious. Sorry...

Love this post. I've been tapping into my creativity in all kinds of ingenious ways that will be manifesting soon with my new website. Ever have that feeling when you know you're on to something clever and total unique? Yep, lots of great ideas have been coming to me. Getting quiet makes all the difference for me to tap into my creativity.
