Social Media Online Branding Speaker

Hashtag 101

Will You Give Students Your Feedback?

Today I taught the basics of hashtags to students at the

Hilton College of Hospitality at

the University of Houston

Hashtags 101

Had fun with showing my peer index as previous speaker of the class was asking if anyone knew what a peer index was and I wanted the class to know more about it ( so that was not part of the hashtag class ;) )

We, Dean Boger and I were going to give them the assignment of getting together with their teams to brainstorm and bring us back a hashtag, then have the entire class vote on which to use.

WELL, we had a few extra minutes before our next speaker arrived, so we used that time for  them to do it organically in class.

Here are the two we came up with:

#UHSoMeHRMA

and

#UofHSoMeHRMA

( our thought process was as followed…we need a recognizable identifier for University of Houston…industry already recognizes SoMe as short for social media…they chose HRMA as it is recognizable as Hospitality Restaurant Management Association.  Here were our concerns: UH is recognized for University of Houston except to University of Hawaii students, so we are in a dilemma do you go with what you know of what is easily perceived by people who are not students of UH yet?  HRMA brought another challenge, do you use it since it also brings up possible conflict with Human Resources Management Association.)

Your feedback is valued, let us know by leaving your comments below.

This is to identify their class which is at the University of Houston,

learning social media for the restaurant and hospitality college.

They were instructed to make it concise, meaningful, memorable and relevant. ( Back to the slideshare for what they learned)

Which of these hastags do you feel met that criteria?

  • marznuk

What about UHouHosp or UHouHRMA? No real need to include social media. If it’s a hashtag, you know it’s for social media anyway.

I find both to be unwieldy as hashtag culture goes – I agree SM is the first thing to go – I would got with #UHHRMA the rest of the tweet should place the context.

Interesting choices, we will run them by the class and keep everyone posted.  The feedback and perspectives is eye opening.
